Do you ever wake up and feel that sore feeling around your throat? Annoying isn’t it? Maybe we ask ourselves, just why do we have tonsils? Enlarged tonsils hurt and if you experience this often, you might also think if there’s even a way to just remove them. Make sense too right?

Though before we decide to get them removed, how well do you know their function? What exactly are tonsils and why do they often hurt? At the end of this blog, you’ll understand everything you need to know about tonsils and tonsillectomy.

What Exactly Are Tonsils and What Do They Do?

Your tonsils are those walnut sized glands located at the back of your throat – one at each side. They are basically composed of lymphoid tissue. If you still have them, you can easily take a look by checking yourself at the mirror while you are opening your mouth wide. Yes, that’s your tonsils and now that you know where they are and what they look like, we’d surely want to know why there are there. Do they have a purpose?

To answer our question, yes they do have a purpose. In fact, they are a part of our immune system. This means that your tonsils help battle infection. We can call them of the first line of defense of our bodies when we have an infection. When you wake up with a sore throat that means your body is already working to get rid of bad bacteria and infection. Sounds good right?

Sure it’s a nice way to have a defense wall but what if it happens frequently? Sore throat is not a joke especially for kids. Did you know that strep infection is the usual cause of sore throats in kids and if this happens frequently, it’s just too much to handle and might even cause serious problems.

What Is Tonsillectomy And Do We All Have to Undergo This Procedure?

This is where tonsillectomy comes in, if you’re still not familiar about this – then it’s the process of tonsil removal. Did you know that this is one of the most frequently performed surgical measures in children? Now, this might really sound scary especially if your child has to go through it but as they say, if you know and understand the procedure – you won’t feel scared or worried at all.

Your doctor would recommend the tonsillectomy procedure once he is able to come up with a diagnosis. One of the most common things to see whether one needs this operation is the following:

  • Recurring strep infections
  • Enlarged tonsils that interfere with breathing and eating
  • Sleep problems
  • Obstructive sleep apnea caused by enlarged tonsils

What to Remember When Undergoing Tonsillectomy

Once a diagnosis is confirmed and you or your child needs to undergo tonsillectomy then you need to know everything about the procedure. No matter how small or big a surgical procedure is, it’s just normal to be frightened especially if it will be for our kids.

As parents, we need to make them understand why this needs to be done and what he can expect after the surgical procedure. This will be quite a challenge but as of today, with the help of medical story books, we can show them how the tonsillectomy procedure works. As for us adults, the same goes too, being well informed greatly helps.

Your doctor will make sure that you are ready for the preparation as well as the tonsillectomy after care process. Being prepared and informed is your key to making sure that you or your child will have a fast recovery.

There are many reasons why our tonsils need to be removed but overall this is a procedure that will help us. With proper knowledge and understanding, we become less scared and less doubtful.
