Captivating Storybooks Introducing Children to the Wonders of Modern Medicine

Chronic Illness is a Gift!

About Me

I was born and raised in the UK but relocated to Hong Kong over 28 years ago. I am multilingual with 5 languages including Chinese.

My Passions

  • Reading and writing to inspire and educate children.
  • Healthcare Advocacy
  • Educating medical students, (mainly 5th year) and doctors and nurses about rare chronic conditions.
  • Producing bi-lingual videos and other videos to educate and raise awareness.

I am currently working on the 23rd book in the Mediwonderland series. I have written over 150 educational books using my philosophy from the famous poet, William Yeats,

"Education is not about filling a bucket but lighting a fire."

I have also been published in many educational print articles and appeared on primetime television twice. I have written textbooks for use in Primary school published by Educational Publishing House.

Hi, I'm Wendy, the creator of the Mediwonderland Book Series. It has long been my dream to write these books, not to profit but to benefit children and parents by demystifying the world of modern medicine.

Inspiration for this came from my experience 15 years ago, taking care of my daughter who spent a year in hospital and underwent major surgery at age 8. She went through a lot of invasive procedures such as a bone marrow biopsy and a splenectomy. I couldn't find anything as a mother to support her through stories, using child-friendly language to allay fears. As she herself says in the short video 'Katie's Story', it would have made the entire experience so much easier.

Aim of the Series

Empowered children are prepared children.

This series of books captivates children from as young as 4 up til 12, providing an excellent platform for:

  • Reading practice (guaranteed to inspire all children to WANT to read)
  • Education about the human body, medical tests, procedures and illnesses.
  • Parent-Child bonding (be ready for lots of questions)
  • Preparation for any unforeseen future circumstances (e.g. X-ray or needing stitches which is very common.)

Healthcare workers

Valuable tools in clinics to allay fears and explain procedures through child-friendly stories.

School Teachers

  • To use in class with children aged from 4-12 with many opportunities for extended learning.
  • Video book format available for classrooms with Interactive White Boards (IWB)

(curriculum guide coming soon).

A Twist in the Tale

In 2012, I was diagnosed with a rare but invisible life-threatening illness that has now rendered me almost bedridden, spending up to half a year in hospital, which is why I use digital means to reach out to children. Because of this, I can now find the time to realise my dream. I see my illness as a gift. I am also honored to be a Patient Leader (see below).

WEGO Health Awards Finalist

I am a patient advocate and health leader and a top 5 finalist in the 2017 Best in Show: YouTube WEGO Health Award category. It means so much to me because as a Patient Leader, I raise awareness, improve healthcare and bring a message of hope. My message is that suffering can be a gift, allowing dreams to come true and impact the lives of millions.

Family Life

I have a 23-year-old son who graduated one year early from NYU with the highest Summa Cum Laude honors. My youngest graduated in June 2018 from the Savannah College of Art and Design studying film where she has won numerous awards and is on the Dean's List.

I believe in fostering positive family relationships, where children's God-given talents are nurtured.

Happy children do better at school and are healthier if they partner with parents.
