Knowing that your child has been diagnosed with Diabetes is overwhelming. You’d have to face a journey where your child needs to learn and live with injections, blood sugar monitoring and low carbohydrate diet / count. It’s not easy but it’s something that we, parents of T1D kids have to face.
Causes of T1D in Children
The real culprit in causing Type 1 diabetes is unknown. Though based on studies, one reason is when the child’s immune system attacks and destroys the body’s insulin-producing cells located in the pancreas. Studies show that genes and other environmental factors do play a huge role in this event.
Insulin is vital to all of us as it performs one of the most critical jobs there in our body. It moves sugar or what we know as glucose from our bloodstream to our body's cells thus making it useful.
All of us might already have an idea as to what CT Scan is, we’ve heard this before and we’ve already seen some information about it too but what do we do when the time comes that our child needs to undergo this process? How do you prepare them? How do we explain it to them in ways that they’d understand?
Living a well-balanced life doesn’t’ just mean that you have to eat healthy foods all the time. Health and wellness is actually a way of living a balance life. This means that aside from your body and health, you also take time to make sure that you have a harmony of intellectual, emotional, health, social, occupational, spiritual and physical life.
As we journey to achieve overall wellness, we will also be facing the challenge of teaching our children how to practice a balanced life. If you think about it, it looks challenging and at most scary. How do you do it? When can you start doing this? What about the influence that they will get or see from other people?
It’s not hard to figure out my inspiration for this book.
Of all the books I’ve written, this is closest to my heart. Why? Because I, myself was diagnosed with Adrenal Insufficiency in early 2012 after having had symptoms for year.
The call from the doctor about my low morning cortisol result and the need to see an endocrinologist changed my life and I was catapulted into a world of blood tests, imaging, new medications and basically having to learn a completely new language.
I am an adult. Imagine If this was your child? A child trapped in a body with a rare disease that often gets missed by doctors, often with catastrophic consequences. Read Kendall’s story to read a true-life story of this.
Watching a little girl grow up is like watching a flower bloom and with every journey to womanhood is also the experience of having your first period. Do you still remember when you got your first period? Did you feel scared, excited or shocked? We all have our own “1st period stories”. Each one of us has different experiences and by now it might be one of those funny or memorable stories that we can share with our daughters.
Sooner or later, it’ll be your turn to educate your daughter about her first period but how confident are you in doing so? We all want our daughters to have good memories of this journey and knowing how to educate and support them would be a great help. Did you know that getting her ready for her first menstruation doesn’t have to be boring or worrisome; in fact, it can be a great way to bond with your daughter.
Do you ever wake up and feel that sore feeling around your throat? Annoying isn’t it? Maybe we ask ourselves, just why do we have tonsils? Enlarged tonsils hurt and if you experience this often, you might also think if there’s even a way to just remove them. Make sense too right?
Though before we decide to get them removed, how well do you know their function? What exactly are tonsils and why do they often hurt? At the end of this blog, you’ll understand everything you need to know about tonsils and tonsillectomy.
The word tracheostomy does not sound like a simple word—it’s one of those medical terms that can make even the smartest person in the room feel a little insecure (yes, including adults). Many people think that the term has something to do with a rare disease that may be hard to treat or worse—one that eventually leads to death. The word tracheostomy can scare a lot of people away, especially since it sounds like such a complex medical term that is difficult to mentally grasp. But, just like we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, we also shouldn’t judge a word by the way it sounds. The truth is that tracheostomy isn’t as bad a word as it sounds, and it’s really not that hard to understand.
The first and most important thing to know about tracheostomy is that it is not a disease...
We all enjoy reading, who doesn’t? Whether it may be from a physical book or from our mobile phones or tablets, the fact remains the same - reading is innate to every one of us.
Now, the technology has evolved so much that it gives us new and effective ways to perform our daily activities. Today, it has innovated even the way on how we read our books! Because of this, we have been getting questions whether they have the option to choose the kindle version or the video book version of the MediWonderland Book series that they are interested in purchasing.
Before we answer that, can you guess which from the image above is from a video book and which one is from kindle?
Ready to see if your answer is right?
Being a parent is a tough job. As soon as your child is born, your priorities change, your outlook in life and how you foresee the future becomes clearer. We will definitely have priorities and one of the top priorities that we’ll have is our children’s overall wellness.
It never gets easy, our journey to achieving proper care including health and wellness is always challenging whether it’s your first born or your third child. Research and personal experiences are very important to us so we would be able to impart the proper knowledge needed for this journey.
As our kids grow older, we start to teach them important life lessons and practices. Part of this is how they would understand the importance of overall wellness. As parents, we try to make sure that while keeping them healthy, we also educate them of the importance of the things that we do for them.
